I am going to audition for a musical for the first time , and the audition song has to be between 45 and 90 seconds long. Any suggestions? Also, is it better to have a live accompaniment, pre-recorded music, or sing acapella? I really don't know anything about this! |

What is this for? School? What? Are you male or female? . . It's always better to have live accompaniment, because they have ears, and can help you if you mess up or get shaky. Especially in your first audition. Singing a capella is a definite no no, unless that's what they specifically want. If you can't get a pianist or whatever, then get a recording of one. Not anything midi, though. It should be a piano accompaniment recorded or something. That's the best bet. I can't really suggest any songs because I don't know what gender you are, so, that's all. _________________ "Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." - St. Paul |

hmmm...its definitely good to choose a song from a not so popular musical just because it makes you stand out. since its wizard of oz, id also go more classic sounding. think rogers and hammerstein, but not cinderella because there will probably be 5 million people singing in my own little corner. _________________ NO, LUKE, I AM YOUR MOTHER'S SECOND COUSIN'S GREAT AUNT'S DAUGHTER'S THIRD COUSIN TWICE REMOVED'S CATSITTER!

Go to halleonard.com and get The 16-Bar Musical Theatre Audition (Mezzo-Soprano will probably serve you better) and look and see what you like. It's a great audition book. |

In my opinion I would do "How could I ever know" from the secret garden because it is a great song to just shine when you are singing it, and there is a lot you can do with it. I have sung this song before and have really made it something so I definitly recommend this song!! _________________ When life gives you lemmons, squirt them in someones eyes. |

Most of the songs from "The Light in the Piazza" would work well.
"I See a River" from "Urinetown" would work, especially if you're a higher alto.
I would suggest not doing something from "Wicked," because everyone will be doing that. _________________ "Clara! Aiutami! Aiutami!" |

NEVER! Do NOT sing a song from the show you are auditioning for. It makes you seem like "Oh, i already know all of this....ect..ect." And if it's a song from a character in the show, it kinda places you...you want the director to get a fair opputunity to see what you can do and so he can place you in any part. By singing a song from the show, he is kind of stuck with the vision, well, she can sing that song and act t out well...and you might miss a chance for a really good part. Also, it is ALWAYS better to go with live accomp. That way, if you mess up, it's not as hard to get back on track..and the tempo can be changed. So, that is my suggestion. congrats on your first audition.
First of all, you may want to check with the director of the community theater. They may already have an accompanist hired for those auditions. (If not, they should) Then you will just need the sheet music of the song you are singing.
Pick something classic that makes you sound amazing and that you feel comfortable with. It might as well be spring from State Fair is a favorite of mine for Wizard of Oz auditions ... it has a similar feel to Somewhere over the rainbow.
Break a leg and most of all HAVE FUN!
